I have a date field on a record (a timesheet). In the footer I have another date field and a button to function as "show records with this date" and it should list them in another layout...

any help is appreciated!

Why don't you create a relationship (internally in the file) from datefield to the datefield (in the footer, as you call it)

Then you can show all records with the same date in a portal...
