MFServer7 won't let users have full access

Featured Replies

I am having some major trouble. I have a single test database. It has on admin account set up with full access. Yet when I have this database served up with FMServer, and I open the file through the remote button in FMPro, and I enter the admin username and password, I dont have full access. Cant create, edit records, enter layout mode, anything.

Yet If I turn off server and access the database file directly from FMPro, I do have full access.

Anyone know what might be wrong?

Larry

You're sure that there's only one account? At first I thought you might not have extended privileges set up to allow full access accounts to connect through a network.... but since it's letting you in?

Have you verified this with a new empty DB opened via server to isolate whether it's your file or the server itself?

To test things out, I just created another new database file. One record, one field. Set up one account, full access to everything, made sure access to FileMaker Network (fmapp) was turned on, etc. I can open in directly in FMPro with no problem. If I have FMServer dish it up, open it through FMPro using remote, enter the correct password information, the file opens, but no full access. Cant add, edit, delete, nothing.

It has me completely stumped.

What is the OS that is running FileMaker Server?

When posting problem reports it is very very important to include information such as that.

Ah, I see this post has a subhead for OS X.

You probably need to assign correct permissions to your files. Under the Get Info, set the Owner to fmserver and the Group to fmsadmin. Read and write for both.

Of course if you were using Intel, you wouldn't have to do this.

OK, this problem just disappeared. Now after the 10.3.6 update, it is back again. Nothing has changed with my file permissions.

I open my file from a remote computer, login using the default admin account, and I have NO access to anything. Cant edit, create, NOTHING.

Very frustrating. Cant quite figure out what it is about FMS7 that keeps causing it to do this.

Larry

I would suspect OS X before FileMaker 7. You say "nothing has changed with my file permissions." Did you look? That's the first thing to check, from the symptoms.

I use a little app, PrivilegeFix, to reset the whole folder at once.

Thanks for the suggestion. Something did change in OSX. I highlighted one of my database files and hit get info. It turns out, according to FM people, the permissions need to be set to Group: fmsadmin with Read & Write.

For some reason one of my files got changed. How odd. I also noticed that if you move your files from one machine to another, these permission settings will change, and you will have to set that back for each file again.

Hello Larry,

You can avoid permission settings being changed when moving files from one machine to another by compressing the files first (with Dropstuff e.g.).
