Server Stops after 5 Seconds

Featured Replies

Hi: Can anyone help me?

My story: I have a single-processor G4 667MHz with 1GB of RAM that I wanted to turn into a dedicated FileMaker server. It was running OS 9.2 at the time, so I wiped it clean and installed Jaguar, FMServer 7 and Server 7 Advanced. I took me a while, but I had it running fine for about 2 weeks. IWP was working too. I hadn't fully developed my databases, so I wasn't running the machine 24-7 yet. But I was just about ready to do so.

Then one day, when I started up the machine, FMServer didn't auto-start. When I opened the console, I got: "Connection Failure. FileMaker Server "(localhost)" (127.0.0.1) is not running. Would you like to start FileMaker Server and then connect" (Yes/No) I click "Yes". The server info pops up, with my registration name, serial number, etc. And it's good for about 5 seconds. Then it says: "FileMaker Server has Stopped. You have been disconnected."

Here's what I've tried:

I've re-installed FMServer several times, restarting right after the re-install, as recommended on this forum. I upgraded my OS to Jaguar (since I wanted to do that anyway). I did a clean install (wiped everything out). Reinstalled Server 7. Installed the 7.0v2 updater. Tried again. Same result.

Any ideas?

What does the server log say?

OK. Now I feel dumb. But thanks, Ender! Problem solved.

For anyone who is curious....

I took a look at the log file (it took me a while to figure out where it was)... it said "Another copy of FileMaker Server is already running with this installation code."

Way back before I decided to recycle this old G4, I had tried installing FMServer on our Windows 2000 server. But I never got it to work, and I gave up and went with a Mac solution because I like Macs better anyway. But I forgot to un-install. Somebody must've re-started the Windows machine recently, and the FMServer software decided to work this time, locking out my G4.

So... I feel dumb. But FMServer is running on the Mac now, so I'm a happier camper. Thanks for teaching me about the log file!

I've had the same problem with version 5.5. That version doesn't show what the installation code is, so when I had to reinstall it, I guessed wrong and had a conflict with our other FileMaker Server.
