How can I limit the number of characters in a Global Field?

I don't know if this is/was a bug on FM's part, or if it's done on purpose. I stumbled across this on accident. Well, it works with FM6 at least.

Set up your field as a regular text/number field. Turn on the validation to "Maximum number of Characters" to however many. Then change the field to a Global. Although it doesn't mention it, the validation still stays with the field.

There are ways of scripting this sort of thing, but why make it complicated?
