HELP PLEASE. I am using FM6. I want to scroll through entries that correctly display a detailed related entry and also enable me to select the detail entry from a list. Let me describe my structure briefly:

I have a CONTACTS file and a VEHICLES file.

In CONTACTS, I have a layout that displays contact info, a List portal (multiple rows) that shows a list of related vehicles from VEHICLES and a Detail portal (one row) to display detailed vehicle info.

I have no problem using a global field and relationship to select an item from the List portal to be displayed in the Detail portal.

The problem is that when I scroll through the contacts, the same Detail portal displays on all contact files. Only when I select a vehicle from the current List portal does the Detail change to a vehicle related the the current Contact.

I can display the appropriate last DETAIL vehicle in each Contact entry when scrolling but then I have to use nav buttons in the DETAIL portal to move from one DETAIL to another. I can't select a DETAIL portal entry from the LIST portal.

In fact, if I go from CONTACTS file to VEHICLES file, select the vehicle, and then switch back to CONTACTS, it will not display the vehicle I just previously selected in the VEHICLES file.

I hope this is clear enough for someone to help.

I solved the problem. In case someone is interested, here it is.

I was already using Brian Dunning's strategy for "Highlighting a Portal Row" (see Advisor,com/doc/14691).

I duplicated the script that selects the DETAIL entry from the LIST entry. I then created navigational scripts for First, Next, Previous and Last and included the duplicated script to each of the scripts.

Now when the users clicks one of the navigational buttons, it goes to the appropriate record and updates the portal. Simple yet elegant.

I hope this helps someone else. If you have any questions, just email me for more details.

Happy Holidays

George
