How to divide a collection into several layers

Hi all,

I once started a collection management database with FM7 Pro and had to give out due to lack of time. Now, i'm re-starting everything from the beginning and am facing some problems i don't even remember i already had to confused.gif...

So, my point is that i have a first layout where i enter new records ; one new record for one new disc. Then, i'd like to create another layout that would only sort the artists that i have discs from so i can pick one artist by selecting his name and beeing linked to a page with all his discs listed on (There shall be at least one more layers of that kind after the artist discs list).

What i don't understand is how i can ask a Portal to only display a defined category of records. I thought i should work with portals but i'm not that sure anymore. I searched "File Maker Pro 7 Bible" and Internet for examples or tutorials but didn't find what i was looking for.

Did anyone already face this problem ? If so, could you explain me what i'm doing wrong please ?

Thanks in advance smile.gif.

Hey there -

The easiest way to do it would be to create a table of artists and then make a relationship from artists to discs. Next, create a layout based on the artist table and draw a portal to the disc table on the artist layout.

You will can then perform finds in the artist table or the disc portal - as you browse through the artists, their discs will appear in the portal.

HTH,
