Slowness when Defining Fields

We have a file with about 15 tables. When you add a new calculation field in 1 of the tables, it takes almost a full 5 minutes for it to finish adding. There are only 300 records in that table, with 177 fiels, about 75 of which are calculations.

Any idea on why it is taking so long?
