Q. Using a field entry to trigger auto entry

Q. I want use a number field to auto fill other number and text fields. For example: I would like to type in a location number and have an address, phone# and fax# fields fill out (as separate fields) automatically. Can this be done? And how? I'm very new to FM. Thanks.

It can be done with Lookups in FMP 6.

Lookups are a way of bringing in related data. The "other number and text fields" will need to be in a separate file where each record has a unique location number.

However, once you've set all that up you can try using related fields instead of lookups. Related fields will display live data from the related records, so if the Location record is updated all the other records will display the new data.

For instances where this "live" updating is unwanted (say, to keep historical data) then a Lookup is better.

You can do this with 2 technics: related field and lookup. i created sample file at fm7. you can use it at fm6, It doesn't make any difference. ı have attached it my post.
