Table view is a locked-down spreadsheet type of layout. You can create a more flexible view of the same data by building a List View layout, in which case you can eliminate & resize your fields to precisely your specifications.

You can eliminate fields from Table View by entering layout mode and removing the fields from the layout. You can resize the width of fields by dragging the edges of the field while in Browse Mode in Table View. You can change the order of fields in Table View by dragging the field title to a new location.
