Text element borders automatically resizing

Some field labels or other text elements will automatically resize when you format them differently. For example, if you cloned field labels and the new word is much shorter than the original, by applying any different formatting, the borders of the label are resized to fit the new word.

Other times this doesn't happen and you have to manually resize the borders to tighten them around shorter words. Anybody have any clue why this works with some and not with others?
