Configuration/Performance for Server Advanced

Featured Replies

I'm currently hosting one DB file with FMP 7v3 on a 533MHz G4 with 512 MB RAM. This configuration has proven very stable for the past 9 months serving to 4 concurrent FMP clients, and up to 5 concurrent (~150 total) IWP users.

Now I'm going to need more concurrent FMP clients, and I'll need to move to server, and since I'm using IWP heavily for remote users, I'll need server advanced.

My question is: Will I be able to make use of the 533 G4 for anything with server advanced? I won't be drastically increasing my traffic compared to when I used FMP to host, but I get the impression that if you want to put both the WPE and FMS on the same machine, the 533 G4 won't hack it.

I could repurpose a Dual 1.8 G5 that I'm using for something else right now... if I do this, will it be faster to run everything on the Dual G5, or to split duties between the G4 and G5? Will the WPE or FMS benefit more from running on the G5 vs. the G4?

Thanks in advance to anyone who's done some performance testing in this regard,

Dana

You can only improve performance by going with FMSA and the WPE (Web Publishihng Engine). FMSA runs as a daemon, which is inherintly faster, and the WPE is optimized for converting the FMP data to XML and XLST. So if you're already running IWP within an FMPro7 app, and it's fine, it shouldn't get any worse, and probably better.

I run FMSA and WPE on the same machine using Windows boxes. I haven't found significant improvement by seperating them, or by putting them on Dual Xeon machines versus a reliable old 533 PII.

I think you should go for it on your 533 G4 and see what happens.
