image "embebbed" or "linked". How to see??

My father has made a database with a "image" field in which (this is the problem) sometimes he has "embebbed" an image, other times has just "linked" an image. I'd like to transform all the database in "linked" images, in order to avoid the file to become too big.

How can I see if an image is "embebbed" or just linked and is there a way to quickly change the "status" of the field to "linked"?
