April 30, 200520 yr Okay, make that A LOT of issues! But here are the only ones I can talk about on this forum ... Lets say I create a file that has, say, two tables and they're linked together in a standard valid way, with the main table's related field being a serial index. If I place both of those fields in a record, shouldn't they display the SAME value? (They don't, the other field is blank.) If I add other fields to each table, create a record, then duplicate that record, shouldn't ALL of the fields duplicate? (Again, they don't.) I've read all about relationships in Filemaker, thought I understood it, and now have run into these amazing little twists. Help! None of my other relationship problems are anywhere near this confusing! Thanks, Alpha-Snail
April 30, 200520 yr Welcome to the Forumn. Sorry about your other issues. The field in the main table is called the primary key the coresponding field in the related table is called the foreign key. The primary key must be unique, the auto entered serial number takes care of that. The foreign key is not unique. If you set the relationship to create related records, then when you add data to the last portal row a new record is created in the related table and the foreign key is filled in the primary key of the record you are in. IF you don't choose to create related records, you must set the value of the foreign key. What fields are not duplicating?
