Hi all,

I have a client who installed FMS7v1 prior to my arrival on the scene. She installed onto XP Professional SP1. I showed up, tried to use SAT to configure the server, and got "Login Failed". She says she made no configuration changes and definitely didn't configure for External Authentication. Another symptom: even though databases are in Databases folder, and in use by Server, they don't show up using open remote from a client machine - in fact, the server itself doesn't show up even when entering the IP address as a Favorite. All machines are in the same Domain workgroup.

I uninstalled 7v1 using the CD, reinstalled 7v1 and applied v3 patch with 7 services stopped. Still no joy.

I've checked in Regedit to make sure there's no Adminauth object - there isn't.

As I type, the company IT person is installing XP Professional sp2, just to see if that's the problem. At this point I'm looking for pointers and suggestions. Any ideas?

TIA,

Colin Keefe

Okay, more info.

Server installs fine on another test machine with XP Professional OEM installed.

Turns out the machine the IT person set up to be server originally had XP Home, which she removed and installed XP Professional on top of. So this is likely something to do with that. Any ideas?

I'd be inclined to completely wipe and reinstall XP Pro, there are some real funky networking issues with XP Home. But, if you want to check first, make sure the the FMS services have actually started. Right click on My Computer, selection manage, and the click on Services. There are four Filemaker service which should show as started.
