record navigator similar to status area

hi all,

I'm trying to create a record navigator similar to the one in the status area since I want to keep the status area invisible to the user. I have a calculation field name called numRecords that keeps the record number of the corresponding record. This field name has been assigned to one of the fields in the layout and it is used to display the current record number.

the problem is, I would also like to allow the user to key in the record number they would like to view and when they press enter they would be taken to the correct record number. However, since the numRecords is a calculation field, the field can't be modified. Basically, I just like to have a record navigator similar to the one in the status area.

I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me solve this problem... thanks!

Welcome to the Forums.

Why not have a blank global field directly below (or beside) your calc field with the text "Go To:" beside it. I think that's actually a clearer interface (especially for a newbie user) to understand. Then the scripting is easy. Of course, to launch a script from a field exit, you've got to use a plugin. I have discovered that because so many people are used to Google's interface, it's not a sin to have a button next to a field saying "Go there!" or something of the sort. People are used to it.

There's a free plugin to do just this from Software for Humans called "Eventscript," not to be confused with Waves in Motion's "EventScript 4.0"(which is not free)
