Value list based on find?

Featured Replies

I am trying to generate a value list from a vendor table. This table has both active and prospective vendors contained in it. I would like to generate a value list of only the active vendors. Is there a way to accomplish this.

Thank you, this forum has been very helpful as I am learning filemaker.

What you need to do is create a self-join based on your active/prospective field. In your current table, you should create a global text field (text field, storage=global) and give it the value "active" or whatever the entry is which indicates that the vendor is active. Next, in your relationships graph, create a new instance of your vendor table, and connect the new global field to the field which indicates active/prospective. This is a self-join. Now you can create a value list based on that self-join relationship; make sure to select "show only related values", and it should show you a list of all the active vendors.

For this conditional value list, define a global in the table where the value list will be used. This global should be the same type (text or number) as your Status field in Vendor. The global will be the filter for a simple relationship between this table and the Vendor table, matching on the Status field in Vendor. The relationship will then look something like:

Table1::gFilter = Vendor::Status

With the relationship defined, you can then define the value list to "Use values from a field" and select the related Vendor ID or Vendor Name field.

Finally, you will need to populate the global gFilter to complete the relationship. Use whatever text or number that you use for the Status you are matching.
