Will using a period in the name of a field (ex."Contact.ID"), have any negative repercussions during future development?

Also on the Windows side . indicate where extensions start in file names, it shouldn't but might cause future problems. Blank spaces can also cause problems, particular with web deployments. The standard I use, and have seen used in a number of other db structures is to use an _ (underscore) as a delimiter in field names.
