Create serial numbers in existing DB, then auto

I need to create a serial number (unique number for each record), then have the serial number auto enter with each new record added.

Your help is appreciated.

For a new datbase: Create a new field, may be text or number. Set it to auto-enter serial number, and check the prohibit modification.

For an exsiting database. Create a new field, text or number. Use the replace comand to set the serial number. Then go back to define fields and change this field to auto-enter serial number, and check the prohibit modification.
