Ecommerce solution for csv orders

Featured Replies

I am trying to streamline the order processing for my ecommerce business by setting up a FM database--the emails are out of hand. It's been nearly a decade since I have played with FileMaker (versions 2 and 3), so please bear with me.

I'd like to take in our orders from various websites via csv files, then be able to process the orders by entering the information in to our dropship providers' websites (manually--unfortuantely). It would be great if I had a layout for each provider to facilitate easy data enrty into their sites. Other issues involve tracking the status of the orders and items within the orders (processed, shipped, backordered, etc) for easy tracking and customer notification via email. Over time, I'd like to integrate more product information etc.

I envision setting up a file with import tables for each of the sources of csv data (some of which differ in formatting). Each ordered item is a row of data so that if an individual orders several items, the order number, customer info, shipping info, etc, is repeated for each item ordered. The csv files also provide the price charged the customer.

Beyond that I would set up an invoice table that integrates the information from the csv files and has a main layout that strips away unnecessary and redundant information pertaining to an order along with layouts customized for entering data into the providers' websites. This table (or maybe another) would be where we check off items as processed, backordered, amd shipped so we can search for orders and/or items by status, enter tracking numbers, etc. Also send out emails notofying customers of back orders, shipped, etc.

Another table would include customer information.

Am I on the right track here? Is there anything I am missing, I am kind of looking for a pretty quick down and dirty solution that I can add to and polish later, but I do not want to set things up now in a way that would not lead me down any blind alleys.

Any pointers, tips, or feedback are appreciated. I sure wish I could find a book like Coulembre FM Pro 2 for the mac. I have FM7 Bible and Using FM7.

Thanks,

Steve
