Duplicating Serial Numbers?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Im working with FMP 6 on the Mac, and I have a question regarding serial numbers. I've got a client with 16 workstations, and files are hosted on a Mac OS X machine with FMS 5.5.

I have a field called Jobnumber which is defined as an autoenter serial number field. Everytime someone clicks on new, they get a new record with a new number. My client says that he has a couple of records with the SAME number (-in other words the automatic serial number doesn't work). He rekons that if a couple of guys hit new at the same time theres a chance that the system might get duplicate Jobnumbers.

Has anyone else encountered this - coz' I cant reproduce this in my client server environment and my clients 300 miles away? Is there something in the caching on the server that I need to change?

Any help would be great;y appreciated

Cheers

Is this field set so that it can not be modified?

I doubt that if all 16 hit new at the same time there would be duplicate serial numbers.

Hi Ralph,

No its not set to be not modifiable. But like you said, I doubt they could duplicate that Jobnumber, if all 16 hit the new button all at once.

I think I might make the trip down to see my client to test out his system. It might also be an idea to make field entry in the jobnumber field, not modifiable.
