I don't think there is a limit, other than exceeding the 2GB file size.

I'd be worried if I had more than a couple of hundred layouts: it could be a flag for bad data design (like hundreds of fields).

FWIW if you were to serve your solution through a browser you could probably get away with but one layout per db file. And since your clients never actually see that layout, it does not need any fancy designs.

In a browser solution format files become your layouts. There is no limit there of which I am aware.

Once you understand how to take advantage of the stateless nature of a browser you will find that the browser offers great solution opportunities.

what is the maxium number of layouts you can have? does anyone know?
