xochi Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 FM Server 7.0v1 allowed Cache size to be set by available memory. 7.0v3 reduced the size of the RAM Cache, as a workaround for some bugs. For example, my Server 7.0v3 installation has a maximum cache size of 224MB on a Mac with 1Gig of RAM. Anyone know if the maximum cache size has increased again in FM Server 8?
Steven H. Blackwell Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 Too much RAM allocated to cache causes instability. IIRC, in Server 8 the constraint that was introduced in Server 7.0v3 remains. However, I will check this for you to be sure. Steven
xochi Posted October 8, 2005 Author Posted October 8, 2005 There is no inherent reason that more Cache should cause a problem -- it was pretty clear from the release notes that 7.0 had a cache bug, which they couldn't fix, so they just applied a work-around (limiting cache size). Was hoping this was fixed in FM8 Server...
xochi Posted November 11, 2005 Author Posted November 11, 2005 Bump -- can anyone comment on whether the maximum cache size on FM 8 server has been raised back again to what it was in FM 7.0v1 and 7.0v2? In FMS 7.0v3, I find a maximum of 224MB on a Mac with 1Gig of ram running 10.4.2.

In FMS 7.0v3, I find a maximum of 224MB on a Mac with 1Gig of ram running 10.4.2. It's approximately 24% of the available RAM, and it should almost never be set that high. There is a ceiling of 800 MB. The exact formula is, IIRC: C=(R-128)*0.25 where R is the amount of physical RAM installed, and C is the resultant available cache size. To be safe, esp. with Server Advanced, I use 256 rather than 128 as the diminution amount. If you are running IWP and expect more than about 30 users, I strongly recommend using 4 GB RAM. HTH Steven
