I just installed the FM Server on our system and it went pretty well as it usually does. But after the install and launcing FM Server 8 our files did not host despite being in the correct file directory.

Out company's engineering dept then came to a stand still. A call to tech support found the following problem:

While in the Admin control panel none of our files to hosted showed up under either the FOLDER or FILES selection

We then went to FM Server 8 Admin panel, and clicked on the properties of the FM server.

Under the DEFAULT FOLDER Tab, there are a few selections. The first one is the default folder directory. For some reason it still had the Filemaker Server 7 name inits directory path. It would not allow us to edit it. We had to create an additional folder path to our files, leaving out the "7" in the file path.

Under the DATABASES tab we deselected the "Check files for consistantcy" selction and hit apply.

Once this was done our files began to show up. But our tech support person is telling us to reinstall FM Server 8 once again.

Has anyone else had this trouble so far? I am reluctant to reinstall it until the weekend, since its working, but maybe by a bandaid. I do not want our dept down again.

I did a normal install according to their directions. A bunch of jibberish appeared in some of the properties fields. The suport tech asked if we had multiple languages installed or not. I repleid no.

The new install method has you remove FM7 Server before you do FM 8 Server, so I did remove FM7 prior to the FM8 Server install

We are working. But please be leary!

Any other ideas, would be appreciated.

I'll look into this; however, the general guidance has always been to remove the older version first. Also, if you ever had any trial version of Server 7 installed that must also be removed.

If--and only if--you really know what you're doing, you can also delete any registry items for Server 7 before installing Server 8. But be careful, because that's a good way to trash your CPU.

Also, I'd recommend that you update to Windows Server 2003.

Yes, I did remove FMS7 prior to the FMS8 install

I used the backup server settings script prior to that, and used the restore server settings script after FMS8 was installed.

We have not had any trial versions on it. We have been a long time FM customer.

I am very familiar with REGEDIT, but may have to resort to that.

OK, good. Keep us posted. As a general rule--as I said--I have found it to be good practice to remove compeltely all the vestiages of older version before installing a new one. That's much easier to do on Windows Server than on OS X Server; hence, FMI provided the unistall tool for Server 8 on OS X Server.
