Error Checking script

What is a good way to write an error checking script that will check if 5-7 fields match exactly.

Like I hit save it go's to the layout does a search to see 5 or more of the fields match exactly.

Look into whether you can use field-level validation in the field definitions, because if you can, you won't have to write a script at all.
