Using a Shared Printer in OS-X

Hi all,

Wondering if you can help with a issue I'm having under OS X - 10.3.9 (yeah, old school!)

When printing in Filemaker, I can't select my shared laser printer in the print dialogue, although it's available in the Print Centre.

The network is a simple ethernet LAN, I'm running a G5 iMac (10.3.9) and Filemaker Pro 7.0v1, the computer the printers are connected to is a G4 tower, not running Filemaker. I have the Network Sharing turned on in Filemaker (for kicks - I don't imagine this is the issue).

Anyone?? Easy one?

Simon:

Welcome to the Forums.

Can you print to that printer from other applications?

You should also upgrade to FMP 7.0v3, which clears up a number of issues, one of which could be the problem.

Thanks! Pleasure to be here...

All other apps can see the shared printers fine. Am downloading the update you suggest now, will see if it helps!

Upgraded to 7v3 and no change - the printers don't come up, but are available in all the other apps...

Hmmm, much pain...

Ok! I've solved the problem, you need to install a copy of filemaker on both machines, even if you just want to print to the shared printer!

It appears that filemaker's own networking protocol needs to be used even for the system to share a printer while in Filemaker...

Now that's just stupid.
