I'd like to draw a rectangle with an arbitrary (variable) size & position on top of a image in a container.

This seems clearly beyond the ability of native FileMaker but possible with a plug-in. However, my search for the right plug-in has come up empty.

You can use the charting plug-in to draw a shape on a background graphic, if that's what you mean.
