First and foremost you will need a developer edition of FileMaker, FMP8 Advanced for example, in order to make your own custom functions. The best place to see examples is Brian Dunnings site

http://www.briandunning.com/filemaker-custom-functions/

That will give you some idea of the scope of Custom Functions.

EDIT. I see that you have 8 advanced (you should update your profile as that is what most of us look at for your version). My advice to look at Brian Dunning's site still holds, in fact even more so as you can copy the functions into your own databases and try them out, and more importantly pick them apart and see what makes them tick. The major disadvantage of custom functions is that they cannot easily be moved from file to file but an advantage is that once they are definied in a file you do not need the developer edition to make use of them (in that file).

If you have a need for them you will wonder how you ever managed without them.
