Creating related records through a portal

I am using a looping script through a portal to create records in a related file using relationship/set field function:

loop

setfield [...]

"nextportal row, exit afterlast"

End Loop

The only way that seems to work is to use [status(currentportalrow)& ...] in an unstored calculation for the key in the relationship. Is there any problem with doing this and are there any better methods?
