"Change to hand cursor" stopped working

Has anyone experienced problems with the "Change to hand cursor" suddenly not working on Mac OS Tiger? Specifically, a file I'd been working on suddenly lost its ability to change the mouse arrow to a hand when it was over a button. The checkbox for this feature is still checked in the Button Setup dialog for every button of every layout in the file but none work. I quit FM 8 Advanced and opened the file with FM 7 Developer and got the same results. Other FM files still work fine.

I then copied the solution to my Windows machine and opened it there and it worked fine. I closed the copy on the Windows machine and copied that copy back to the Mac. That copy of a copy is now working.

The file in question has not crashed nor has the Mac crashed while this file was open. The only thing I can possibly attribute to this odd behavior is a Mac OS software update (Security Update 2005-2009) that ran while the file was open. After the update was made, the Mac showed the dialog telling me that the computer needed to be restarted and that by clicking the Restart button it would quit all applications and restart...so that's what I did.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Lotsa folks are having strange issues with the update, including kernel panics. It may be screwed up caches. See www.macfixit.com for more details.

Try deleting all your caches (there are several cache cleaners on www.macupdate.com) and restarting a couple of times.

Hi Cyborg Sam,

I did as you suggested but unfortunately it didn't make any difference. Thanks for trying, your suggestion was appreciated.

Does this Mac have multiple users? I've noticed that when I switch out a second user doing backup, the cursor from Retrospect will appear in the active user's screen. Weird.

It does have multiple users but I haven't noticed any other problems. It seems more than coincidence that the only problem is with the one file that was open at the time of the update. All other FM files appear to be okay.

Perhaps the restart command did not allow FileMaker to close the file cleanly for some reason, so it essentially crashed. Either way, it's a bummer when files start behaving badly. My #1 wish for FileMaker is a complete file parser/diagnostic/recovery.

That would make a lot of FileMaker developers very happy. Until then, you can take it to the bank that I won't allow update installer software to close my files for me.
