Populating a field

What would be the best way to have a field get populated by a search option. In other words I have three fields that you can search by, Serial Number, LastName, and FirstName. If a person searches by Serial Number I want the information to come up on another layout giving all the information of that person.

Script your find, then finish the script by going to the related record in the layout of your choice.

Have you thought about what you'll do if your search returns multiple records? First and last names might not be unique from record to record.
