NRT.Rob Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Hi All, I currently have FMP5 server running on a very, very old dedicated machine. Works fine, but the time has come to let classic go for the workstations and migrate to a true server setup in OSX. I know with the old server programs in OS9, if the host machine had "file sharing" active, FMP server performance would plummet. Well, I'm very much hoping not to have to buy two new machines here in order to upgrade our fileserver to OSX server and the FMP server program. So, the question is: can I run FMP8 server on a machine with OSX server without taking a huge hit in performance for either one? Or are there still some kind of conflict issues in OSX as far as that is concerned? Thanks in advance!
Ender Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Welcome Rob, If you have a lot of users, OS X Server is a recommended operating system for FileMaker Server (for over 50 clients, OS X Server is essential,) BUT you should not use that same machine for file sharing, web hosting or any other services. FileMaker Server still wants excusive use of the server for its own processes. If you don't have many clients connecting, then the workstation version of OS X can be used.
NRT.Rob Posted January 2, 2006 Author Posted January 2, 2006 sniff. I was afraid of that. We're a small shop, only 3 of us, however the performance of FMP5 in peer to peer hosting was just way too slow. Plus the crash issues were worse. I guess this will just put off my file "server" (currently just another networked old OS9 machine without even Server 9 heh) upgrade for awhile while I focus on the FMP server upgrade. Thank you very much for responding!
