conditional formatting of a summary field?

I have a crosstab-type report consisting only of summary and sub-summary fields. I want to have conditional formatting of several of the subsummary fields, and I've been using the traditional way of doing conditional formatting: creating a _display calculation field with a formula like so:

Case (sumReconciled < sumPhotoDone; TextColor ( sumReconciled; RGB (255;0;0)); TextColor ( sumReconciled; RGB (0;0;0)) )

It displays correctly in the layout with the formatting, but it all the subsummary parts are displaying the grand summary value-- i.e. they're all the same and not broken down by the grouped field.

Is it possible to show the correct data and the correct formatting at the same time, or is this Yet Another Filemaker Limitation?
