January 7, 200620 yr My boss recently said he thought I should get a new server for my FM 8 upgrade. Being no fool, I immediately agreed, then I thought to myself "Hey, quad Xeons would be cool." But then I thought "Gee, 64 bit would be cool" And then I thought "Yikes, I'm gonna need a buttload of 15K SCSI drives, this could get expensive..." And then I thought "Wait, what about an XServe? I don't like SATA, but those suckers sure are sexy..." And so on... So, the question is, what should I do? I want raw, brutal, butt-kicking speed, but how best to achieve this? Should I get a dual processor machine at higher speed, or slightly slower machine with quad processor capability? Would FM Server even notice quad processors? Anyone have real-world experience with these beasts? And what about a G5 server? Any comparisons on performance versus Windows-based servers? What sorts of high-end features will provide the best bang/buck ratio?
