Running a 5.5 and 8 server on same network

We currently serve out about 8 solutions, half of them relational, using FM 5.5 server on a G3 tower running Classic (9.1). Works great.

I am retooling a G4 Panther server to run FM 8 server to make the transition to OS X, but still need to run 5.5 for the next few months anyway. In experimenting with some of the 8 solutions (which are working well), I noticed a significant slowdown on the 5.5 side, and I suspect it caused 5.5 server to lock up.

Does anyone know if it is ill-advised to run two servers on the same network? I was under the impression that the protocols had little in common. Thanks for any ideas.

Dave

There's no conflict running both versions on the same network. But you can't host both versions from the same computer.

I've been running Server 8 & 5.5 on the same netowrk with no problem. Now, this is a Windows-based network mind you, but there really shouldn't be any differences.

hi,

this won't be a problem, but with regards to your svr 5.5 locking up - check the FM knowledge base for issues. the primary thing is to get it up to server 5.5v4!

cheers,

jd.

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. FM support seemed to think that there might be a slowdown in traffic since they use the same port, but I'd be surprised, considering the miniscule traffic we generate. I will get that 5.5 server up to v.4, jd — thanks.

What a great resource this is!

Ender,

Thanks for posting about running 5.5 and 8 on the same computer. I was about to attempt this as I beging migrating to 8. I have an Xserve G5, however, with dual ethernet ports. Even though you've said you can't run both on the same computer, do you think it would be possible to do this anyway if I assign one IP address to Server 5.5 and the other to Server 8?

Thanks

I really don't know, but I'm not sure it would be a good idea anyway, as both are pretty demanding.

FMS 5.5 does not support multihoming, that will be the problem.
