Import Log?

I was updating a FM8 database using XML and noticed that an import log (text file) was created. I don't know how it came about, I love it, so I'd like to replicate and have this as part of the solution. How does FM8 create the import log and how can I use the same theory/methodology to create custom logs for imports/exports?
