Our solution has 100+ layouts with the same interface for navigation (buttons that look like folder tabs).

The graphics for the button (blue if active / gray if not) and the labels (Home, Contacts, Projects, etc) are relationship based - so I can change them whenever needed and have them change on all 100+ layouts.

On some layouts with several portals, the button and it's label fill in slow. The whole navigation interface shows quickly, but the buttons in questions (when you click it and go to that layout) fills very slow - showing up the same time the portals fill.

This makes it look like there are 11 folder tabs and one is missing until it appears.

Any ideas on making this near-instant?

I'm not up on this enough offer a real solution, but I beleive you can impact the order in which the field populate. Try a search realted to graphics, but I thought it was related to the grouping or maybe by moving to front/back sort of thing.
