Does anyone out there know if I can transfer a FileMaker Pro 8 layout to a FileMaker Pro 6 file?

I've tried copy and pasting, and although it worked, it converted my layout elements drawn using the FileMaker tools into an image. Im trying to retain the FileMaker elements as they were created.

I have both a PC and Mac and both platforms produce the same results.

This is not possible. You will need to recreate and arrange all the objects in your FM6 file.
