My name is Jordan I'm the director of info services for a private school in Toronto.

I was hoping the FM community might be able to give some feed back on a error my fileMaker 5.5 server has been giving me lately.

During heavy use (teachers entering comments and grades at the same time) the server appears to crash/shut down.

No one can get into it. When I log into my Xserver to see what is up the FileMaker server config app is not running.

When I click the start button on the config app an error dialog pops up stating

"Unable to start server

Another instance of filemaker server is already running.

Request command has not been executed."

I have to end up restarting the os in order to get the server back up.

Anywho if anyone has ever seen anything like this and can give me some direction I'd really appreciate it.

thanks

JOrdan

Ho JOrdan!

I haven't seen that particular error, but I'd suggest checking the event.log file and maybe the console.log file to see if there's any useful discription of why it closed.

In any case, it's not normal, but I'm not sure if the problem lies with your settings, the software, or some sort of corruption of a particular file.

It would probably help to know more about your setup. How many client are connecting when it fails? What rev of FM Server? What's the network speed? About the heavy-use file, how many records? How big (in MB) is the file?

What has been your practice on rebuilding after these file close unexpectedly? Ever have to Recover?
