Text Based Serial Number

.. my serial number is stored in a number field, however its actually got an element of text in it i.e. a prefix of the letter "A" ... it seems to work fine, but am i likely to face any repurcussions?

It depends on how you are using it. If you are using it for a relationshipo and you decide that there will be other prefixes besides "A", then you will have a problem. As far as I know, any letters in a number field are ignored, meaning "A123" will be treated the same as "B123".
