I need to use a file that was created in filemaker 6 on a different computer with filemaker 8 installed. I think it transfered ok, because it now has the fm7 extension but when I try to change any data it tells me the file is not modifiable. Do I need to correct this problem on the original computer with permissions of the file, or can it be fixed on the second computer in the newer version? The file was transfered by email. Does that make any difference?

Check the OS X permissions for the file. Your user account should have Read & Write permission.
