Hi,

I am new to Filemaker and to this forum. I have only experimented with Filemaker for a few days. If I have posted this in the wrong section, please move it to the appropriate section.

I am trying to create a simple inventory program for a small non-profit organization that I am working with for a class that I am currently taking. This organization receives supplies from a manufacturer, assembles the supplies, and ships the finished products back to the same manufacturer.

All of the supplies have individual Part Numbers. Once the parts are assembled, the finished product is given an Item Number. Different Part Numbers and different quantities of it make up an Item Number.

The organization would like to be able to enter in an Item Number, and have all the Part Numbers and their respective quantities be displayed. When a shipment comes in, the Part quantities should increase (can be input manually). When an Item has been assembled, we want that Item Number to increase (input manually) and the Part quantities to be deducted from the inventory (automatically). When the finished Item has been shipped, we want the Item Number to decrease (automatically).

I have tried using the search function on this forum and the help files on Filemaker, but it’s difficult for me to understand all of it without knowing where to start. I am using Filemaker Pro 7. I would really appreciate it if someone can provide me with a simple open source file or at least point me in the right direction, such as tutorials, etc. Any help would be great!

Thanks.

I second that. Feeling a bit foolish because this is probably quite basic, but I've bought a couple of the best books and they tell me everything except this.

Here's an inventory file that comes free with FM8. I believe you can download it from filemaker's web site. I believe if you play with it and take it apart you will get a good understanding of the inner workings of FM. As a newbie I can tell you that's what I did to begin with and every time I get stuck the folks on this forum pull me thru. Sometimes they have to kick me }:( , but they are always there to help. Good luck.
