siriusproductions Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I have nearly searched the whole forum before making this post (as I always do and wish most people would do more). I have successfully installed and run FMServ7 & Server Advanced on about 3 WinXP machines until my most recent build (a WinXP Pentium D w/ 1 GB RAM) and not even after reinstalling 3 times and updating to Server7v4 have I been able to get the darn thing to OPEN a database. At MOST you can barely see that it flashes open for a milisecond. None of the files, not even the default or my biggest, a 25MB data file in a alternate folder will open. Is there something I could be missing? I am making the install from Back-Up CD-ROM of the Developer's version of Server7 and/or over a network drive, but that shouldn't matter. I've tried 3 different upgraded FULL licenses of the product, THAT doesn't work either. Give me everything I may have overlooked. I checked to make sure FMServer7 was installed under an administrator account. It never asked for ALL USERS or "Just Me" so I assume it has to be for ALL. I've reset the "File Sharing" to simple sharing for ALL USERS, which I usually have tightened down a bit more. I've Saved Compact versions of the file and tried, but NOTHING makes the darn Server open the databases. HELP!
Vaughan Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Have you been through the event log to se what it says? Is it a license conflict -- does each copy of FMS have its own unique installation code?
siriusproductions Posted March 1, 2006 Author Posted March 1, 2006 I had looked at the log and saw nothing alarming, but checked again now and see that it actually shows that I opened the databases, but I see the status as closed and neither FMDev or FMPro see's any files on the hose. I can email the log file to you. I have 3 unique licenses. One is for FMDev and limited for Server7, but I have 2 full licenses (650 users) that I had on previous computers one that is no longer in operation anywhere on site and the other I rarely use at home for testing remote WAN database access so their shouldn't be a conflict. This is killing me. Any more ideas?
Vaughan Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 "I've reset the "File Sharing" to simple sharing for ALL USERS, which I usually have tightened down a bit more." The FMP files should NOT be shared using OS-level file sharing. This could be the problem. Also check the files ownership and permissions. I have no idea what your reference is to a "full license for 650 users" -- it's not a FileMaker license!
siriusproductions Posted March 1, 2006 Author Posted March 1, 2006 Thank you for your reply, but I'm not talking about FMP, This is an issue with FMS(Server). The "licenses" I refer to is what controls the number of FMP users that can connect to the database being hosted by the Server. FMDeveloper comes with a limited licenses on the Server allowing 5 connected users. The FULL $999 license allows 650 users simultaniously. MY problem is my ******* server admin won't actually open the freaking files for sharing.
siriusproductions Posted March 1, 2006 Author Posted March 1, 2006 A little more info: I found a recurring error in the event log The description for Event ID ( 626 ) in Source ( FileMaker Server 7 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: FMServer_Sample_Config. HOWEVER, this error occured only during the first installation of FMServer. Since I've reinstalled it 3 times, I don't get the error log, but files still do not open. Might this be my problem? A bad or missing DLL file? I hoped reinstalling would fix it, but apparently not. Maybe I'll uninstall EVERYTHING related to Filemaker (Pro, Developer, and Server) then I'll install Server first. If anyone has any other ideas. Hit me back.
siriusproductions Posted March 1, 2006 Author Posted March 1, 2006 NOPE! Nope Na Nope NopeNope! Uninstalled everything, even cleared a few REG keys with FileMaker associations. Reinstalled FMServer first. Went to Admin to connect and open the default file and NOTHING! This HAS to be a Windows conflict. This is a fresh install custom build PC. I do have Windows Defender (BETA 2) on here, but I ended that process and again tried to open the database and STILL NOTHING! Any ideas?
adrain Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 (edited) I have the same problem. I have updated some files from FM6 to FM8. I put them into the FMserver7 folder and tried to use the FMadmin to open the files. Again for a millisecond they open but then close. I have checked over everything I can think of. If I make a new file in FM8 I can open it with FMadmin no problem. Its only with the files I have moved from FM6 to 8. So the problem is not limited to Windows but exists with Mac OSX as well. adrain Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 I seemed to have managed to solve my problem. Hope it helps with yours. Locate the files on the server, don't open them but Get Info about file (command + I on mac) then change the permissions for Group access to read and write. I can now open the files using FM admin.
