new field shows up in Layout but not in Table

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I added a new field to one of my underlying tables (in Define Fields), then added it to the layout for that table (which is just ordinary Table view). The new field shows up in Layout view and List view, but I can't get it to appear in Table view. Any advice?

Thanks!

Is that field into the body part of your layout ?

Yes, it is in the body of the layout, between two other fields that are showing up just fine in the table. Thanks!

Are you sure that that field isn't a second occurrence of a field ? ( in TABLE view only one occurrence is showed )

I created the new field in Define Database, and it only appears once in the Fields list for that table. I even successfully added the field to another layout. I just can't figure out how to get it to appear on the original underlying Table layout. :) I don't see an option for "New Column" or anything. Am I missing something obvious?

I can't replicate your problem ...

So I think that it's better if you post your file with the "missing" field in TABLE view.

Unfortunately, I use server software, so I can't copy and share the file. Thank you for your suggestions, though! :)

Underneath every Table view is a "Normal" layout that contains the fields listed in Table view. Table View is a mode of viewing information stored in underlying tables, and as such is an alternative to List View or Form View, which appear in the menus beside the Table View option.

In order to add the new field to the Table view, go into layout mode for the Table View layout in question. When you do this, you should see not your table view, but a basic layout with the fields that belong to that layout. If you add the field to the body of this (Normal) layout, when you go back into Browse mode, the Table view should have the new column.

HTH,

David

That's what I did already, and it's always worked for me before--that's why I'm a little baffled. Although I realize it's not ideal, I've attached a pdf of a shot of layout view for this table. "Order" (near the top) is the field I added. When I go to browse mode, it's nowhere to be found. :)

Ahhh...so many fields !

You have probably reached the maximum amount of space avalaible for TABLE view that is about 7.999 pixel. (circa 14 A4 pages placed side by side)

So, to see all your fields, every column must be no more than 108 pixel widht.( the average of 7.999/74 (the number of your fields) )

To do that, while in Browse Mode:

1) make a click in the first column header (so it becomes black)

2) shift click in the last column header (so all the headers become black)

3) right click any header

4) set column width to 108

Now you'll be able to see all the fields ! ( and one of them may be max 115 pixel widht, so that 108 * 73 + 115 = 7.999 )

Resizing the column widths worked--brilliant! Thanks so much! That's by far my biggest table, so I hadn't run in to that problem before. A good reason to limit table sizes in the future. :)
