cursor blind spot

Each time I place the cursor in a field, I see the vertical text cursor, but immediately next to it is a blind spot (white space) approximately 50 x 50 pixels. I can type through it, but can't see what I'm typing.

If I use the arrow keys the white space does not move with the cursor.

I use Windows 2000 and do not have this problem in any of several dozen other programs.

Anyone know a solution?
