It's a "Getting started and Understanding what you're doing" type of manual. And one that is both well written and illustrated. To its credit, it does not confuse and frustrate by adding in a bunch of advanced mumbo-jumbo!

It simply tells you what you need to know in a way that you can understand it.

It advertises itself as "The Book that should have been in the box" which would have to be taken with a grain of salt, or at least a fistful of lubricant as the book is BIG and couldn't possibly fit. Really though, the book is jam packed with information, pictures, recommendations and oh, did I say INFORMATION?

I usually pick up a book, do a quick 'look through' and go from there. This book, on the other hand, grabbed my attention and went from there.

Each section contains special dark shaded boxes filled with frequently asked questions, tips and tricks, caveats and further clarifications that add another level to the step-by-step "how-to" instructions that make up the bulk of the text. I found these boxes added depth to the otherwise surface level topics, providing developers with real world examples or useful ways to implement each topic.

Two appendices at the end of the book extend its value. The first is a list of further resources for the FileMaker product line and the second is a printed list of FileMaker error codes, which help make it a handy desk reference for any developer.
