Is there a way to make a field default to the first value in a value list when a new record is created? I want my value list to show NEW when a new record is created, unless the user specifies another value. I think this rules out auto-enter.

If the first value of your value list is new, then you can use the auto enter to use that value. When the user tabs or clicks on that field the value list will still come up and allow a new selection to be made as long as entry in the field is allowed.

That depends upon whether it's a custon (fixed) value list or based on values from a field.

If you can work out what criteria make it the first item in a value list, make it into an auto-enter calculation.
