Newbies toddgm70 Posted June 16, 2006 Newbies Posted June 16, 2006 (edited) I am new to Filemaker Pro and found your site extremely useful for making a conditional drop down menu. My question is How do i make three conditional drop down menus. For example, in the first category, I choose a type of food (meat, vegitable) if i choose meat, my choices are (fish, beef, chicken, pork) if i choose beef, the third drop down will be populated with a host of dishes with meat as its primary ingredient (peppercorn steak, beef bourgninon, BBQ beef ribs, etc). I have tried doing this but i get into trouble with the third choice, as there are now 2 qualifiers. I have searched the net for a guide to this, but i havent found one. Thanks so much, Todd Edit: I have added my partially constructed database Operative_Log.zip Edited June 16, 2006 by Guest
Genx Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Example: Two Tables, one for options, one for selection, three fields in each. Option Table: Field1 Field2 Field3 Selection Table: DropDown1 DropDown2 DropDown3 Value List 1 comes from Field1 Value List 2 comes from Field2 over relationship starting from Selectiontable: OptionTable-SelectionTable Field1=DropDown1 Value List 3 comes from Field3 over relationship starting from Selectiontable2: OptionTable-SelectionTable2 Field1=DropDown1 Field2=DropDown2 Hope this helped ~Genx
Newbies toddgm70 Posted June 16, 2006 Author Newbies Posted June 16, 2006 Genx, Thank-you so much for sending me this response. It will take me some time to decipher that but thanks so much! Todd
Newbies toddgm70 Posted June 16, 2006 Author Newbies Posted June 16, 2006 Im sorry to bother you, but i really am having problems setting up relationships....I know that your explaination is foolproof, but when it comes to databases, i am quite a fool! I dont really understand what you mean by: Value List 2 comes from Field2 over relationship starting from Selectiontable: OptionTable-SelectionTable Field1=DropDown1 Value List 3 comes from Field3 over relationship starting from Selectiontable2: OptionTable-SelectionTable2 Field1=DropDown1 Field2=DropDown2 How do i imput this information? I cant seem to find where in Value Lists i can do that? thanks again for all the help Todd
Genx Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Well, Value List 2 is the value list attached to DropDown2 i.e. its simply your second list in a 2 field conditional value list system. All we are doing with the third list is adding an extra criteria. Assuming you know how to set up a basic conditional value list, this should make some sense if you logic it out, but i'll have a look at your sample in a sec.
Genx Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 See attached, If you have FM8, only the blue TO's in the entity graphs are envolved in the value list filtering. Operative_Log.zip
Newbies toddgm70 Posted June 16, 2006 Author Newbies Posted June 16, 2006 You are godly! That works very well! thanks again
Genx Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Well, that's kind of you, really But just make sure you pull it apart and work out how it got done.
aldipalo Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Hi Genx: Lovely indeed. Do you think this could be applied in a City, State, Zip situation? I have a ZipCode database that has all Cities, States and zipcodes included and would be great if I could type in the City and then click on State and get those related States and the get the proper zip or vice versa. Any ideas, suggestions? Al
Genx Posted June 17, 2006 Posted June 17, 2006 Yes it would be very easy to do in the same fashion as above. Have a go and if you have any trouble come back and i'll post you an example.
