jtringale Posted August 16, 2001 Posted August 16, 2001 Hi All, We just upgraded to FM5 and we're running it on a network of 5 users(TCP/IP). Perhaps we never noticed it before but if I open one particular file before the other users none of them can access the file. They all get an error message that says "HR Databse is currently in use and could not be opened. The file is single-user or the host could not be found on the network." If any other user opens the file first everyone (including myself) can access the file without a problem. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Thanks for your help. Joe T.
Vaughan Posted August 17, 2001 Posted August 17, 2001 <alarm bells> Let me guess how your db is set up... The files like on a file server volume, and you open the databases by clicking on the file icon. This is not a good setup: in fact it's BAD. You *really* need a dedicated machine to run FMP and permanently host the databases. people them use the dbs by opening FMP on their machine, connecting through the Hosts button and opening the database from the list. The other method is unstable and unreliable, big time. As you are discovering. And so many people do it.
jtringale Posted August 17, 2001 Author Posted August 17, 2001 Hi, THank you for that information. I'm passing this on to our network administrator. In the meantime, is there a fix for this? Joe T.
jtringale Posted August 17, 2001 Author Posted August 17, 2001 Hello Again, Just thought of a couple of other factors. This is a really low-volume setup. Also, there are many other FM files we have set up in this manner that aren't giving us this problem and this particular file never gave us this problem until now. We checked the install instructions again and supposedly this is an "acceptable" means of installation. What is it that makes this setup unstable and why is it working with other FM files and the problems are specific to this one? Thank you again for your assistance. WE appreciate your comments. Joe T.
