Is there any way to achieve sliding within Portals?

We are trying to create a portal for Invoices which allow extra-long product descriptions to be accomodated yet not require extra-large space assignments.

You're better off not printing portals. If you need to print a record with related info (like an invoice), you're better off printing from the related file in List View. This will allow you to accommodate varying field sizes more efficiently & allow you to print the information much more effectively.
