Does this option store a relative or absolute filepath to the location of the image? I'm pretty sure its absolute, but i thought i'd ask anyway.

Yes. If you move it you cannot see the image; unless you move it back. It would be possible, if you wanted a relative reference, to parse such from an imported or inserted path; then use that in a calculation to display the image.
